Genting Highlands

Malaysia's premier hill resort — cool climate, theme parks, cable cars, and mountain entertainment just 1 hour from KL

Genting Highlands is Malaysia's answer to a mountain resort — but with a uniquely Malaysian twist. At 1,800 meters above sea level, the temperature drops to a refreshing 15-24°C, a welcome escape from KL's tropical heat. The mountain is crowned with a sprawling entertainment complex: theme parks, a cable car that so above the rainforest canopy, a premium shopping outlet, hotels, restaurants, and a casino. It's where Kuala Lumpur families go for a weekend, where couples escape for cool mountain air, and where thrill-seekers ride roller coasters above the clouds.

What makes Genting different from other hill resorts is the scale. This is not a quiet colonial hill station like the Cameron Highlands. It's a purpose-built entertainment mountain — loud, bright, and unapologetically commercial. The contrast between the misty rainforest outside and the neon-lit entertainment complex inside is part of the appeal. It's a 1-hour drive from KL (or a spectacular 10-minute cable car ride), making it the most accessible mountain escape in Malaysia.

Things to Do in Genting Highlands

Genting SkyWorlds

The crown jewel of Genting's entertainment offerings. This outdoor theme park features 9 themed worlds with over 20 rides and attractions. The Epic zone has thrilling roller coasters including the Voyage to the Moon, a launched coaster that hits 100 km/h. The Ice Age zone is family-friendly with gentle rides and a real snow play area. The Studio Plaza hosts live shows and parades. The park sits at 1,800 meters, so the cool mountain air makes walking around pleasant even on sunny days. Tickets: RM 170-220 (online discounts available). Allow a full day.

Awana SkyWay Cable Car

The 10-minute cable car ride from Awana Station to SkyAvenue is an attraction in itself. The gondolas travel 2.8 km above the ancient rainforest canopy, offering views of the Titiwangsa mountain range and, on clear days, the KL skyline in the distance. The glass-floor gondolas (RM 50 surcharge) are worth it for the thrill. The ride is smooth, safe, and spectacular — especially in the morning mist when the forest below disappears into clouds. Operating hours: 7 AM - 10 PM. Last ride down at 10 PM.

Genting SkyAvenue Complex

The entertainment and shopping complex at the summit. It houses a massive indoor mall with international brands, a 24-lane bowling centre, an indoor theme park (Skytropolis), an IMAX cinema, and dozens of restaurants. The architecture is futuristic and dramatic, with LED screens and light installations. Even if you're not staying overnight, the complex is worth exploring for its sheer scale and energy. The Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park has 20+ rides and is perfect for rainy days.

Genting Premium Outlets

Located at the base of the mountain (Awana Station), this open-air shopping mall features 150+ international brands at outlet prices. The architecture is designed to look like a European village, with cobblestone walkways and a fountain plaza. Brands include Coach, Michael Kors, Nike, Adidas, and Uniqlo. Discounts range from 30-70% off retail. The cool mountain climate makes outdoor shopping comfortable. There's a free shuttle to the cable car station.

Chin Swee Caves Temple

A 9-storey Buddhist temple built into the mountainside, accessible via the cable car (get off at the Chin Swee station). The temple features a giant Buddha statue, a pagoda with sweeping views, and a vegetarian restaurant. The statues and gardens are beautiful, and the misty mountain setting adds to the atmosphere. The temple is free to enter. For non-Buddhists, it's still a stunning cultural and architectural experience. The vegetarian restaurant serves excellent Chinese Buddhist cuisine.

The Casino (SkyCasino)

One of only two legal land-based casinos in Malaysia (the other is in the Cameron Highlands). The casino is massive, spanning multiple floors with thousands of slot machines and gaming tables. Entry is restricted to non-Muslims (ID required at the door). Smart casual dress code. The casino is not just for gambling — the architecture and interior design are worth seeing, even if you don't gamble. Minimum bets are low (RM 10-25), making it accessible to casual visitors.

Hiking and Nature Trails

Most visitors never leave the entertainment complex, but the rainforest around Genting is ancient and beautiful. The Chin Swee Forest Walk is a 2.5 km boardwalk through the forest near the temple. The Genting trail leads to a waterfall and a hidden pool. The Highlands Mushroom Farm offers tours of their edible mushroom cultivation — a surprisingly interesting activity. For serious hikers, the Bukit Kutu trail (near the base) is a challenging 6-hour climb with rewarding views.

Butterfly Wonderland and Bee Farm

Near the Awana Bio Park, the Butterfly Wonderland is a tropical garden with hundreds of butterflies, including the rare Rajah Brooke's Birdwing. The Bee Farm next door produces highland honey and offers tasting sessions. Both are educational and family-friendly, offering a break from the artificial environment of the entertainment complex. Combined ticket: RM 30. Allow 1-2 hours.

Where to Eat

Genting has a surprisingly diverse food scene. The SkyAvenue food court has 50+ stalls serving everything from Malaysian to Japanese to Western. The restaurants range from budget food courts to fine dining.

  • Food Court (Level 4, SkyAvenue): The cheapest option. Malaysian, Chinese, and Western stalls. Expect RM 15-30 per meal. The roti canai and nasi lemak stalls are surprisingly good for a theme park food court.
  • Burger & Lobster: London's famous seafood restaurant has a Genting branch. The lobster roll is the signature. Pricey but worth it for a special meal. RM 120-200 per person.
  • Chin Swee Vegetarian Restaurant: At the temple, this restaurant serves authentic Chinese Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. The mock meat dishes are remarkably convincing. RM 20-40 per person. The view from the dining hall is spectacular.
  • Cafes at Premium Outlets: The outlet mall has a good selection of cafes and restaurants. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and Starbucks have outdoor seating with mountain views. RM 20-50 per person.
  • Highland Hot Pot: A steamboat (hot pot) restaurant that's perfect for the cool mountain climate. The seafood is fresh, and the broth is flavourful. RM 60-100 per person.

Practical Information

  • Getting there: 1 hour from KL by car (highway E8, toll RM 15). By bus: RM 10-15 from KL Sentral or Pudu Sentral (1.5 hours). By cable car: Drive/bus to Awana Station, then cable car to the summit (RM 18 return, 10 minutes). The cable car is the most scenic option.
  • Weather: 15-24°C year-round. Bring a jacket — it gets cold at night (10-15°C). Rain is common in the afternoon, especially during the monsoon (November-February). Check the weather before booking outdoor theme park tickets.
  • Best time to visit: March to October (dry season). Weekdays are less crowded than weekends. Avoid Malaysian school holidays and public holidays when the crowds are overwhelming.
  • Tickets: Buy SkyWorlds tickets online for discounts (RM 170 vs RM 220 at the gate). The cable car ticket is RM 18 return (standard) or RM 50 (glass floor). Combo tickets (theme park + cable car + meal) offer the best value.
  • What to pack: A warm jacket (essential), comfortable walking shoes, umbrella, and a small backpack. The temperature difference between KL and Genting is 10-15°C — don't underestimate it.
  • Accessibility: The entire complex is wheelchair-accessible. The cable car has wheelchair-accessible gondolas. The theme park has accessible rides and facilities.
  • Religious considerations: The casino is restricted to non-Muslims. Muslims can enjoy everything else. Halal food is available everywhere. The Chin Swee Temple is open to all visitors.
  • Staying overnight vs day trip: A day trip from KL is possible (leave early, return late) but exhausting. An overnight stay lets you experience the mountain at night, when the temperature drops and the complex lights up. Hotels range from budget (RM 150) to luxury (RM 800+).

Where to Stay

  • Genting SkyWorlds Hotel: The newest and best hotel. Connected directly to the theme park. Modern rooms, great views, and early access to rides. RM 400-800/night.
  • Genting Grand Hotel: The iconic pyramid-shaped hotel. Recently renovated with modern rooms. Walking distance to SkyAvenue. RM 300-600/night.
  • Awana Hotel: At the base of the mountain, near the cable car station. More affordable, surrounded by forest. Good for nature lovers. RM 200-400/night.
  • Highlands Hotel: Budget option near the summit. Basic but clean. RM 150-250/night. Book early — it's the cheapest option and fills up fast.
  • Day trip from KL: If you're on a tight budget, stay in KL and take the early bus (7 AM) to Genting. You can see the main attractions and return by evening. Total cost: RM 50-100 for transport + tickets.
